Course Created December, 2024
This is a course designed to be a comprehensive discussion of Diffuse and Limited Systemic Sclerosis for hand therapists.
The course is divided into 6 distinct modules for organization of content:
Module 1 covers the history and basics of scleroderma laying the foundation for how to view the illness as a clinician.
Module 2 addresses the unique components of an upper extremity assessment of an individual with scleroderma with targeted areas for focal attention from the clinician.
Module 3 looks at the tailored ADL adaptations important to implement in order to avoid “storm damage” in the upper extremity challenged with scleroderma.
Module 4 takes the learner on a pathway of suggested treatment interventions, both priority and sequencing for best success.
Module 5 addresses the problematic clinical challenges with case reviews, both successes and failures to enhance clinical reasoning with this population.
Module 6 looks at what’s called “the next step” as a clinician to provide access to those with scleroderma in your referral sphere as a professional. It also discusses pragmatics and challenges that may be encountered along this pathway.
There is a companion treatment guideline attached to the course to assist the clinician in their approach to therapeutic intervention. This is not intended as a stand-alone document, and refers back to course content for context.
