Intrinsic Muscles
Muscles that originate and insert within the hand are intrinsic muscles.
Lumbricals
Four small worm like muscles nestled in the hand
Knowing how the lumbricals and interossei work, you can determine which structure is tight.
- Originate from soft tissue and insert into soft tissue
- Contribute to the dorsal mechanism
- Its own antagonistic structure
- Fibers run longitudinally
- Workhorse of the hand
- Originates from flexor digitorum profundus (FDP)
- Inserts into the dorsal mechanism
- Lumbricals may be pulled into carpal canal & recede proximally to the distal end of radius when a full fist is achieved
- Maximum length of lumbricals is when you have a full fist
- Shortest length of lumbricals is when the hand is fully extended
- Lumbricals assist with pinch by exerting force to the base of the finger which will oppose the thumb
Four lumbricals: index and long innervated by median nerve, ring and little innervated by ulnar nerve
